Community & Purpose
A few weeks ago, we welcomed SCU students back to campus for the Winter Quarter. Thirty of those students spent the first week of their Winter Break on Ignatian Center Immersion trips to East Los Angeles, Ecuador, and the US-Mexican border. As we’ve learned throughout the years, these experiences of accompaniment help students deepen their sense of belonging in the world and at SCU.
One such student was Yesi Magdaleno-Solis ‘20, who is now a staff member working as the Alumni Relations Community Engagement Manager. Yesi credits her first Immersion trip for providing her with a sense of community and purpose. Throughout her years here as a student, Yesi became an Ignatian Center “superstar” and was involved in many of our programs. You can even see her artwork featured throughout the 2020 explore Journal and in other Ignatian Center materials!

Like Yesi, so many of our students find their hearts and minds opened to the beauty of cultures and lives they had not known before - here, there, and everywhere.

Holding it Together
For Yesenia Magdaleno-Solis ‘20, her first year at SCU was a challenge as she attempted to navigate being away from her family and support system. That all changed once she went on her first Immersion trip. Yesi continued her Ignatian Center involvement throughout her undergraduate years as a repeated Immersion participant, an Arrupe Fellow, and ultimately, a contributing artist to Ignatian Center's publications. She exemplifies the Ignatian spirit of working to create meaningful connections and speaking from the heart, and in this case through colors.
