Kinship & Solidarity
We’re excited this month to share stories from the Winter Break Immersions. You’ll read about our students’ experiences of growing into a deeper awareness of how we are all connected. In their accompaniment and learning with communities far from SCU, they discovered a fundamental human connection that bound them as neighbors with one another.
One group of students went on an immersion to the Dominican Republic, where they had the opportunity to explore the intersection of anti-blackness with issues of education, migration, and economic access. The other group went on the immersion to East Los Angeles, which included conversations with community leaders and local parishes to get to know the lives of people in the neighborhood. Those students also visited Homeboy Industries, where tenderness is the core of care and restoration for people who have formerly been incarcerated. This immersion exemplifies SCU’s core value of kinship and solidarity and amplified the Mission Week (November 2022) presentation from Tom Vozzo, CEO of Homeboy Industries. We invite you to learn about how these experiences brought them to a deeper understanding of community and mutual responsibility.
Kinship & Solidarity
Over the 2022 Winter Break, 17 students traveled to East Los Angeles and the Dominican Republic to learn more about social justice issues in those communities. Though two very distinct destinations, students from both immersion trips were able to acknowledge the importance of recognizing our humanity despite our various circumstances or labels.
