Dear Member of the SCU Community,
As we approach the end of the fiscal and academic year and we welcome the summer, I would like to take this opportunity to first express on behalf of the HR team our gratitude and appreciation for all your contributions, collaboration, and hard work during this unprecedented and challenging times. I am personally grateful for being part of and being able to serve the SCU community.
I am also happy to inform you that we are introducing a quarterly HR Newsletter. The intent of the newsletter is to provide faculty and staff with news and information about Human Resources programs, events, and people. We hope you find the information helpful. I welcome any feedback or suggestions you may have on the information you would like for us to include in the newsletter.

Quick HR Update
During the past year, the Department of Human Resources has been focusing on ensuring business continuity and providing resources and support to faculty and staff as we transitioned to and continue to work in a remote-work environment. Members of the HR team have also focused on participating and collaborating with different resilience and COVID-19 working groups and committees in their efforts to protect the health and safety of our staff, faculty, and students while supporting SCU’s academic mission.
For the upcoming months, our focus will be the phased return to campus, finalizing salary planning, fiscal year-end, benefits-related audits, and preparation for the 2022 benefits plan renewals.

Important Update on Health FSA and Dependent Care FSA Plans On December 27, 2020, the Consolidated Appropriations Act 2021 was signed allowing us to provide additional temporary flexibility to employees regarding your Health Flexible Spending Account (FSA) and/or Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts (Dependent Care FSA).
We are pleased to let you know that we will be implementing the below in regards to your current Health FSA and/or Dependent Care FSA:
Carryover
Similar to the 2020 plan year unused funds rolling over to 2021, we will be allowing employees to carry over any unused funds from their 2021 plan year into their 2022 FSA plan year, up to the amount allowable. This applies to healthcare/medical FSAs and dependent care FSAs.
Election Changes
Healthcare FSA: The Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2021, allows us to accept prospective FSA election changes regardless of whether you’ve experienced an IRS-qualifying event. This means you may be able to newly elect, change, or revoke your Health FSA on a go-forward basis. We cannot accommodate a retroactive election change. Changes to your Health FSA must be made between June 1, 2021, and June 18, 2021, for an effective date of July 1, 2021. Newly elected amounts must be no less than amounts already reimbursed.
Dependent Care FSA: Additionally, the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 announced the ability to temporarily increase the dependent care flexible spending account annual contribution limit from $5,000 to $10,500 for the 2021 taxable year.
Information on how to initiate the special one-time mid-year enrollment or increase the contribution amount can be found here.

2022 Holiday Schedule
The 2022 Holiday Schedule is now available. Note: due to the beginning of the academic winter quarter and to provide employees with a four-day weekend, the New Year's Day holiday will be observed on Friday, July 1, 2022, instead of Monday, January 3, 2022. In other words, Monday, January 3, 2022, will be considered a regular business day, and Friday, July 3, 2022, will be considered an SCU Holiday.
July Closure Days
Per the Acting President’s message, July 6 through July 9 will be considered closure days. The closure days do not impact our payroll schedule, i.e timesheets due dates or pay date. July 7, 2021 will remain the pay date for the pay period ending on June 30, 2021. Instructions on how to complete timesheets for the closure days can be found here.
Return to Work on Campus Update
The Department of Human Resources is committed to providing timely and helpful guidance as we begin the return to campus and complete this transition by the new academic year. The monthly HR Return to Campus email has been delayed, as we are awaiting guidance from the state that is expected no later than June 15. It is our hope that this guidance will provide substantial direction to employers and enable us to confirm what regulations and protocols will be in place for the summer and fall. Until this new guidance is delivered to the community by HR, the current protocols will remain in place:
-
Remote work should continue to be leveraged and flexibility and support should be provided to employees.
-
Only employees that must be on site due to business need in preparation for the fall should return to campus at this time.
-
All buildings will be prepared for re-population by June 15.
Wellness and Employee Development Workshops
Our Mission to Wellness and Employee Development programs continue to provide workshops for employees in the various areas of wellness - emotional, physical, financial, occupational, and social. Please see the HR Calendar to view and register for both SCU and vendor-sponsored workshops. These are updated regularly so be sure to check back often.
If there are specific wellness or development topics you would like covered, please email missiontowellness@scu.edu.
