Student Testimony

What motivated you to pursue a global education experience?

I’ve spent my whole life in San Jose, California, where I was born and raised. Being bilingual in both Spanish and English motivated me to pursue my global education in a Spanish speaking country. I intended to combine my passion for the Spanish language with the opportunity to immerse myself in the Spanish culture of Salamanca.

Describe your initial thoughts and feelings as you prepared to study or intern abroad.

My aspiration to study abroad began my freshman year at Santa Clara, after listening to previous study abroad students share their challenges and experiences. Their stories intrigued me, and I soon started the process of planning my own abroad journey. Although I had traveled out of the country, I was ecstatic but anxious to embark on this four month journey by myself. My main goal was to challenge myself speaking Spanish, by expanding my vocabulary, learning new phrases, discovering unique expressions and fully immersing myself in the community. However, I feared that I might have difficulty finding a community where I could truly belong. To prepare for my journey, I thoroughly investigated Salamanca. I found resources that allowed me to familiarize myself with the local culture and traditions. Taking this extra step gave me the confidence and the certainty to embrace my decision to study abroad.

Share a memorable experience or encounter that immersed you in the local culture.

One memorable experience that allowed me to immerse myself in the local culture was when my class took a walking trip to a nearby community. This community is called “El barrio del Oeste”, and is known for its bright and colorful urban art on its buildings. Through the murals, we gained knowledge about the important history and culture of the city of Salamanca. We were able to gain a distinct perspective through the local community, discovering and learning about how its past continues to shape everyday activities. This specific experience enabled us to acquire a more personal view of Salamanca, helping us understand and appreciate the unique customs and traditions.

Discuss your academic or professional experiences abroad.

When I found out that I was able to study abroad in a Spanish speaking country, I was so excited to be able to deepen my understanding in Spanish. I soon realized that my Spanish was not the same as the Spanish spoken in Spain. Although I struggled at the beginning, I soon learned new expressions, new mannerisms and even got to encounter various dialects and accents. Although challenging, my Spanish classes were helpful and supportive. We learned new colloquial words and phrases, expressions and navigated Spanish culture together. Little words made all the difference, instead of “computadora” it was “ordenador” and instead of “mande” it was “qué.” I adjusted quickly, frequently using “vale” and taking a siesta at 2pm. This new environment was an eye opening experience, it made me realize that although other cultures are different, they are also beautiful.

Reflect on the personal growth and development you experienced during your time abroad.

As I reflect upon my experience abroad, I am able to confidently say that this experience has transformed me in indescribable ways. Through being challenged and amazed at the places I visited, I learned that uncertainty is an opportunity for growth and discovery. In a new environment, I was encouraged to adapt and embrace the unexpected. New lessons and experiences shaped my understanding of the world and the important communities that exist within it. I learned to be independent and adaptable, to navigate new challenges with an open mind.

Describe the friendships and connections you formed with both local residents and fellow students.

As study abroad approached, I was nervous I wouldn’t be able to find friends I could share a personal connection with. My worry grew stronger when I had missed the bus that was meant to pick up all the students in our program. This meant that I had to find my own transportation as well as my residence hall. My first day of orientation was nerve wracking, but I soon managed to step out of my comfort zone and engage with other students. We quickly bonded, sharing our stories and experiences. The first day we planned a trip, we were going to Portugal. From the beginning of the program, we shared special moments that helped us form a close-knit community. I found myself in a supportive and welcoming environment, where we challenged and encouraged each other to grow. The relationships I made throughout my experience made my experience more meaningful and enriching. Being able to step out of my comfort zone, brought me amazing friends that played a central role in my development and personal growth.

Share a story about a challenge or obstacle you faced while studying or interning abroad and how you overcame it.

One of my biggest challenges while studying abroad was organizing my time. Upon my arrival, I found it difficult to juggle my academic, social and personal obligations. Classes were very different from what I had originally imagined, they required my full presence and participation. Although I speak Spanish, I felt as if my classes were highly demanding and rigorous. I had various essays and group presentations to start, all while experiencing a new atmosphere. Many times I felt overwhelmed, frustrated and annoyed with the mass amount of work I had to complete. I eagerly wanted to be able to assimilate, to make my social, economic and academic connections a part of daily routine. Although I initially had found it difficult to integrate my academic life into my daily routine, the friends I made along the way were amazingly supportive and patient. We worked together to find our personal balance.

How has studying or interning abroad influenced your career goals, worldview, or future aspirations?

My global education experience has opened a new world of possibilities for my future. It has reinforced my love for the Spanish language and has made me realize that I would like to pursue a future incorporating the language. Deepening my connection and appreciation for the language and culture, I am eager to connect my passion for Spanish into my future career. I will carry my abroad experience everywhere I go, recounting the valuable lessons I've learned.
