Scholarships

On average, students at SCU receive a combined amount of $100,000 in scholarships annually to help fund their study abroad programs. Students looking to apply for scholarships can access more information and advising help in the Get Started Advising Series.

National Scholarships

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship

If you are a Pell Grant recipient and a U.S. citizen, you are eligible for the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program.

The Gilman Scholarship offers eligible students awards of up to $5,000 to help fund their study abroad. Students studying Critical Need Languages are eligible for an additional $3,000.

The Gilman-McCain Scholarship provides awards of $5,000 for undergraduate child dependents of active duty service members to study or intern abroad on credit-bearing program.

A. Gilman Podcast

The U.S. Department of State and the Gilman Scholarship Program created the A. Gilman Podcast to educate about the Gilman Scholarship program, including application tips and tricks. Hear from student recipients about the scholarship process. 

Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) Scholarships

FEA works to provide scholarships and ongoing support to students with financial need who are underrepresented among the U.S. study-abroad population, such as students of color, community college students, and first-generation college students before, during, and after they participate in education abroad programs.

Boren Awards for International Study

The Boren Awards for International Study funds study abroad for U.S. undergraduate students in world regions critical to U.S. interests. Awards range from $8,000 - $25,000 depending on the length of the program. Boren Scholars from diverse fields of study immerse themselves in the cultures in world regions underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. Boren Scholars study a wide range of critical languages, including Arabic, Chinese, Portuguese, and Swahili. Boren Awards are available to students of all proficiency levels who are committed to enhancing their skills.

The Freeman-ASIA program is designed to support U.S.-based undergraduates with demonstrated financial need who are planning to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia.

Oxford Scholarship

An endowed University Honors Program scholarship annually sponsors one junior student for a year of study at Mansfield College, part of Britain's University of Oxford. See program details at the Study Abroad Portal.

Summer Study Abroad Scholarship

The Summer Study Abroad Scholarship is designed to provide financial support to students with demonstrated financial need, enabling them to participate in international educational experiences. This scholarship aims to make studying abroad more accessible, covering a portion of program fees. Students are notified after nomination whether they are considered for this scholarship.


Other SCU Scholarships

LEAD Koret Fellowship

To be eligible, you must be LEAD Scholar.

Through generous grants from the Koret Foundation and private donations from supporters and alumni, the LEAD Scholars Program offers fellowships to support LEAD Scholars interested in engaging in extracurricular learning opportunities that will support their vocational development including unpaid internships, community-based learning, undergraduate research, conferences, and independent creative and research projects. Information sessions are offered each quarter and students are required to attend one before applying.

Program Provider Scholarships

Program providers often provide scholarships for students studying on their global programs.

API Scholarship

To be eligible, you must be participating in an API Abroad program.

API awards millions of dollars in study abroad scholarships annually ranging from $250 – $2,000 per student. Be sure to review the scholarships that API offers, the requirements for each, as well as the award amounts that are available.

Arcadia Scholarship

To be eligible, you must be participating in an Arcadia Abroad program.

Approximately 70% of study abroad students who apply for aid from Arcadia receive some form of award. Awards range from $250 - $2,500 per student. Arcadia Abroad considers their commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusivity in their scholarship awards. Students submitting for scholarships will have the option to submit a 300 word essay.

CIS Abroad Scholarships

To be eligible, you must be participating in a CIS Abroad program.

CIS Abroad’s scholarships and grants are designed to help you navigate some of the financial barriers on the front end of your study or intern abroad process: getting a passport and booking a flight. Because these tasks are time-sensitive, our grants function on a “first come, first-served” basis. There are limited spaces for each grant and we announce awards on a rolling basis, so apply early. You can find the grant application in your CIS Abroad portal.

DIS Scholarship

To be eligible, you must be participating in a DIS program.

Each year, DIS provides over $2 million in scholarships. On average, 50% of all students receive financial support from DIS. Many more are applying financial aid granted from their home institutions towards their DIS experience as well.

IES Abroad Scholarship

To be eligible, you must be participating in an IES Abroad program.

IES Abroad’s financial aid is designed to take the guessing out of study abroad financial aid and make it more equitable for all. You can apply for all IES Abroad financial aid with one single application and know your total IES Abroad aid amount within five days of applying, so you can start planning sooner with less surprises. IES offers up to $7,000 in scholarships and aid for an IES Abroad program.

ISEP Scholarships

To be eligible, you must be participating in an ISEP program.

ISEP has a few scholarship awards students can apply for and may receive up to $1,250 if selected. Recipients are chosen via a lottery system after the submission of a brief application that establishes financial need, demographics, and a short personal biography. Please note that once you begin your application you cannot leave the webpage until you press “Submit.” Applications cannot be saved.

FIE Scholarships

To be eligible, you must be participating in an FIE program.

FIE offers a Sharif Rahman Summer Scholarship worth $1,000. The application deadline is February 15 by 11:59 pm GMT.
