March Associate Provost Global Engagement Update

We are wishing everyone in our quarter programs a good finals week and restorative spring break, next week. For our semester programs, we wish you well in midterms.

International Faculty Fellowships

Congratulations to Dr. Jesica Fernández, Assistant Professor, Ethnic Studies, who has been selected for the prestigious 2024-25 Fulbright-Schuman European Union Affairs Program. Watch for more information in our next newsletter.

International Visitor

Scott Lyngaas, Director of the French Studies Center at IES Abroad, visited SCU this month. IES is SCU's long-standing partner for study abroad in Paris and Nantes. Dr. Lyngaas met with faculty in Business and French, as well as with students studying abroad in 2024-25 and students who returned from studying abroad in 2023-24.

Study Abroad Pre-Departure Orientation Program

The study abroad pre-departure orientation phase for 488 students studying abroad in 2024-25 kicked off on March 6 and will last through May 22. Students attended panels and dinner with study abroad returnees from 2023-24 programs.

In the pre-departure phase of the Study Abroad Program, students focus on intercultural and global learning, preparing for academics in a different country and health and safety. Students will complete the mandatory pre-departure module in Camino and attend a final health and safety webinar on May 22.

Re-Entry Program for Study Abroad

This Winter Quarter we welcomed back 331 students who returned to campus after studying abroad in Fall 2023-24. Returnees participate in the study abroad re-entry program, which includes the opportunity to serve as Global Engagement Ambassadors. In addition, returned study abroad students engage in a re-entry module through the Study Abroad Returnee Workbook. As part of the re-entry program, students receive a study abroad sash to wear at graduation.

Holi Gulal Giveaway

From March 18-22, stop by Global Engagement in Aloysius Varsi Hall to pick up free Holi gulal powder to use in your Holi celebrations. Stay tuned for our Holi Holiday Announcement.

2023-24 iExchange Program

This month, faculty, staff, and student iExchange participated in Easter Egg Decorating in the Global Engagement Lounge.

International Student Events

ISS Advisors will be available for drop-in advising and travel signatures prior to Spring Break.

International students are encouraged to participate in an upcoming employment workshop to learn more about academic internships (CPT: Curricular Practical Training) and post-graduation employment (OPT: Optional Practical Training). International students can learn more about OPT and CPT on our website, and sign up for a workshop now:

Spring International Student Welcome Orientation

Global Engagement looks forward to welcoming an anticipated 20 new international graduate students who are starting their academic program in the spring. International Student Welcome orientation for new students is on March 27.

Global Engagement Staff Updates

Our team presented in the NAFSA Northern California District Meeting last week. Sessions included: Cura Personalis and Cross-Departmental Collaboration, Melissa Heid, Director of International Students and Scholars, and Taylor Lepird, International Student Advisor; Creating a Sense of Belonging: International Education Week, Nat Civ, Study Abroad Advisor, and Raisa Velazquez Bonet, Assistant Director of International Students and Scholars.
