Dean’s Message
Along with the Class of 2022, I am also new to SCU. I was recently appointed Interim Dean of the School of Engineering while a national search for a permanent dean takes place, and I am delighted to be here.
After years of engineering faculty engagement, my career turned toward finance and management at two large research universities. The confidence and problem-solving skills instilled through my engineering training helped me tremendously in this transition. Subsequently, my years leading two private engineering colleges and then serving as interim dean of engineering at a large public university reinforced my appreciation for project-based engineering education, which I am happy to find is a hallmark of SCU Engineering.
Over my first weeks here at SCU, I’ve met with many faculty, staff, and students. These conversations have reinforced my original perception of the superior quality of this engineering school and the terrific educational experiences we provide. They have also illuminated the work we have ahead to meet the University’s expectations for respect, fairness, and justice for all colleagues—be they tenure-track or contract faculty, staff, or students. Honoring our Jesuit roots, we must strive for excellence in everything we do. Given the talents and commitment of this community, the reputation and resources of the University, and our location here in Silicon Valley, the potential is enormous.
Throughout my career, I’ve been involved with many institutions universally acknowledged to be among the very best. Yet, I haven’t been anywhere with the current strengths and future potential I see here at SCU. I very much look forward to the coming year as we engage our students in challenging and productive educational experiences while striving to realize the many opportunities facing us.
