Chicken Coop (ENGR 110, Fall 2011)
Students: Ashley Ciglar, Jack Miller, Hao Zhang
Advisor: Shoba Krishnan
This project is a continuation of a project started in Spring 2011. The previous group of students hadn’t considered some of the technical issues of the structure – foundation, pitch and structure of the roof, connections between members. In this redesign, the technical features were addressed, as well as other desired features such as walls tall enough to allow staff to standup (for easier cleaning and maintenance), natural light and nest boxes to encourage the chicken to lay their eggs in the coop. The director suggested a door or hatch on the outside that would allow a person to reach in from the outside to get the recently laid eggs. And, the chicken coop had to be sturdy enough to withstand severe weather and to keep predatory animals out (raccoons, foxes, dogs).
