Animal Facts Exhibit Renovation (ENGR 110, Spring 2006)
SCU Student Chapter SWE
(Course/Advisor – N/A)
The SCU student organization of SWE coordinates the One Step Ahead program each spring. High school girls involved in GAINS (Girls Achieving in Non-traditional Subjects) through Santa Clara Unified High School District come to SCU to learn about engineering from the SWE students. The goal is to introduce the high school girls to engineering, and encourage the high school girls to pursue careers in STEM fields. In spring 2006, the SWE chapter wanted to provide a hands-on experience through a real-world project at Happy Hollow Park & Zoo. Several of the interactive exhibits within the Zoo built in the 1970’s were in need of repairs to restore functionality. The SCU group chose to work on “Animal Facts” exhibit which provided information about animals at the zoo. As a team, they diagnosed problems, and then worked together to get the exhibit working properly again. The students got hands-on debugging/repair experience while working on a project for a community organization in need.
