Santa Clara University School of Engineering Introduces Ph.D. Program in Bioengineering
SANTA CLARA, Calif., July 7, 2023— To meet the increasing demand from students and industry, as well as to further enhance the academic quality and reputation of the Department of Bioengineering, Santa Clara University's School of Engineering has introduced a Ph.D. degree program in Bioengineering. By establishing a Ph.D. program in Bioengineering, the School of Engineering is taking a significant stride towards strengthening its research program.
"Our faculty are actively engaged in cutting-edge research, with many successfully obtaining funding from prestigious sources, including NIH and NSF, as well as various corporate and foundation partners. The introduction of the Ph.D. program will reinforce our position as a prominent leader in the rapidly expanding field of bioengineering and enhance Santa Clara University's reputation as a top-tier educational institution," said Professor Yuling Yan, Founding Chair of the Bioengineering Department.
The creation of a Ph.D. program in Bioengineering will benefit Santa Clara University in various ways. It will attract higher caliber faculty members with cutting-edge research portfolios, expand and enhance our community of scholars, and draw more external research funding. It enables the department to provide students with a more comprehensive education in bioengineering topics and prepare them for successful careers in biomedical engineering and related fields. It also has the potential to attract professionals from the medical device and biotechnology industries in the Bay Area by leveraging our established industrial track.
To effectively fulfill the objectives of the Bioengineering Ph.D. program and to benefit both students and the community, the Ph.D. program will:
- Provide education and training of the highest quality at the intersection of engineering, life sciences, and medicine in order to equip graduate students with the skills and knowledge necessary for successful and fulfilling careers in the biomedical and biotechnology industries
- Produce graduates with a comprehensive understanding of how bioengineering and related fields may fuel discovery and innovation to advance human health and improve patient outcomes
- Leverage our location in the heart of the Silicon Valley to promote and foster research collaborations with the local medical device, biotechnology, and biopharmaceutical industries
