Robotics and Automation Program

Program Objectives & Student Outcomes

Mission

The mission of the School of Engineering’s Graduate Robotics and Automation Program is to provide world-class educational programs for our students, to develop new knowledge and innovative technology, and to apply our technology to solve real-world challenges and create value in collaboration with external partners. The Program is managed at the level of the School, not through any one academic department, to ensure interdisciplinary access and flexibility in the design of its academic programs and application areas. The Program challenges students to develop deep knowledge in fundamental disciplines, to integrate knowledge and technique through the synthesis of new technical systems, and to apply such systems in ethical and socially conscious ways for the benefit of others.

Program Goals

  • To provide transformational educational experiences that connect engineering theory and practice to real-world applications.
  • To create new knowledge and methodologies that advance the field of robotics and automation.
  • To develop innovative technical systems that solve real-world problems and create new value opportunities for external partners, stakeholders, and collaborators.
  • To explore and promote socially conscious development and use of technology.
  • To cultivate a broad, inclusive, and interdisciplinary community of scholars dedicated to technology education, research, and leadership.

Student Learning Goals and Objectives

  • Evaluate applied and practical engineering problems through the application of fundamental knowledge and techniques from mathematics and the engineering sciences.
  • Design interdisciplinary systems that meet requirements and satisfy customer needs.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Communicate complex concepts and designs in both written and verbal forms.
  • Assess how advanced technology can lead to extraordinary value creation, both commercial and social, while also posing critical ethical and societal challenges.
