Mr. van der Burg has spent the last 30 years developing a variety of medical devices and technology. Most of that time has been spent in the development stage, pre-commercialization companies. He is currently the Co-founder and CEO of Venova Medical. Venova is developing a next generation percutaneous AV Fistula procedure. Prior to his current role, he was the Chairman, CTO and Co-founder of Siesta Medical, which is developing and commercializing minimally invasive treatments for obstructive sleep apnea, and co-founded and served as CEO of Ross Creek Medical (acquired by Stryker). Ross Creek was a highly capital efficient company that developed novel soft tissue fixation technologies that were designed to improve the strength and simplicity of the reattachment of soft tissue to bone. Prior to Ross Creek, he was co-founder and CEO of Aspire Medical, which was launched after he served as an entrepreneur-in-residence at Three Arch Partners. Aspire focused on developing novel surgical therapies for obstructive sleep apnea. Previously, he was co-founder and Vice President of Research and Development for Appriva Medical (acquired by ev3, Inc.), where he led the development of a novel cardiac implant and procedure for preventing stroke associated with atrial fibrillation. He also served as Director of R&D at Prograft Medical (acquired by WL Gore and Assoc.) and held engineering management positions at Advanced Cardiovascular Systems (now part of Abbott Vascular).
Besides his involvement with Venova Medical, Mr. van der Burg advises and serves on the board of several early-stage medical device companies in the medical device field.
Mr. van der Burg earned his B.S.M.E. from Cal Poly University, San Luis Obispo, and an M.S.M.E. from Santa Clara University. He is an inventor on over 90 patents in the medical device field.
