At the undergraduate level the Department of Applied Mathematics offers instruction in ordinary differential equations, numerical methods, and probability and statistics in support of the undergraduate program in engineering. At the graduate level the department offers a variety of courses, as well as a master’s degree in applied mathematics.
Our Mission
The Department of Applied Mathematics at Santa Clara University strives to serve students and faculty members in the School of Engineering in three main ways: (1) by offering undergraduate and graduate courses in applied mathematics and statistics beyond the level of the calculus sequence, (2) by collaborating in research with faculty and graduate students in engineering and providing consultation, expertise, and assistance in applied mathematics and statistics and other related services to students and faculty, and (3) by furnishing the opportunity for students to pursue a master's degree in applied mathematics outside usual working hours.
The department endeavors to maintain a flexible curriculum to accommodate students' wide variety of goals, backgrounds, and aptitudes and to hire faculty members with broad research and teaching interests. We expect our students, both undergraduate and graduate, to learn mathematics and its applications to their own engineering disciplines. Scholarship is encouraged, especially in collaboration with colleagues in the School of Engineering.
Undergraduate and graduate engineering students learn some topics in mathematics and some applications appropriate to their field of study.
Students apply mathematics in an engineering context.
