- Skyler Kriese
Supervisor: Chad Raphael
Project: Skyler helped review the literature, and researched and wrote case studies, for a book on community-driven research for environmental justice. Her case studies focused on how EJ groups and researchers collaborated to address workplace health and safety for Florida farmworkers, climate resilience and equity in California, and sustainable development in rural India.
- Sarah Young
Supervisor: Chad Raphael
Project: Sarah (Communication and Environmental Studies, class of 2024) created research resources for the annual sustainability and justice workshops taught by the Initiative in collaboration with SCU’s Center for Sustainability. She co-authored a guide to teaching sustainability competencies across the curriculum, created with a working group affiliated with the Association for Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education. Sarah also searched the literature for articles, curriculum repositories, and other resources about how to integrate environmental justice into courses in multiple disciplines. She updated and created handouts that help train faculty members to teach about sustainability and justice in the classroom, by using the campus for applied learning, and through community-based learning and research projects. In her time at SCU, Sarah also worked as a Communications Assistant for the Center for Food Innovation and Entrepreneurship, an intern for Santa Clara Magazine, and an Environmental Ethics Fellow at the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics.
- Jacqueline Thai
Supervisor: Chad Raphael
Project: Jacqueline (Environmental Studies and Communication, class of 2024) conducted research to support the annual sustainability and justice workshops offered by the Initiative in collaboration with SCU’s Center for Sustainability. Jacqueline searched the scholarship of teaching and learning to find articles, curriculum repositories, and other resources about how to integrate environmental justice into courses in the arts and humanities, social and natural sciences, engineering, business, and health. She updated and created handouts that supported faculty members to teach about sustainability and justice in the classroom, by using the campus as a living lab for applied learning, and through community-based learning and research projects.
- Javier Espinola
Supervisor: Chad Raphael
Project: Javier helped review literature, and researched and wrote case studies, for a book on community-driven research for environmental justice. His case study focused on researcher-community partnerships to plan for a just transition to a clean energy economy in New York State.
- Daniel Mendoza
Supervisor: Chad Raphael
Project: Daniel researched community groups, and faculty at Jesuit and California institutions, who work on environmental justice to help build the Initiative’s networks for community-driven research. He also conducted interviews with student researchers on projects led by faculty members affiliated with the Initiative, produced a video on their experience, and contributed research to inform our social media strategy.
