OUR PROGRAM
The School of Education & Counseling Psychology is pleased to offer Bilingual Authorization in Spanish to help future educators meet the dynamic needs of multilingual children and youth. Dual language programs have proven to be the single most effective program for students identified as English learners.
Becoming authorized as a bilingual instructor can lead to a wider range of teaching position options in the state of California. Bilingual Authorization Program graduates are authorized to teach their content area(s) in:
- Spanish and English
- English Language Development
- Spanish Language Development
- Specially Designed Academic Instruction in English.
Our Bilingual Program is unique as our faculty are all former bilingual teachers and provide a critical lens on the education of Multilingual Learners.
All of the courses are taught in Spanish, to provide BMATTC candidates with additional opportunities to sharpen their Spanish Teaching Language.
The online program offers the right blend of synchronous and asynchronous activities to optimize learning for our bilingual teacher candidates.
The program is guided by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing and SCU’s Jesuit mission where competence, conscience, compassion, and social justice are central to our work.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Bilingual Authorization is an on-line program for elementary, middle and high school teachers that are bilingual in Spanish and English. We offer two pathways for completing the Bilingual Authorization: Pre-Service and In-Service Pathways.
Pre-Service Pathway. For students enrolled in the MATTC program, they can add the Bilingual Authorization by completing 3 additional courses (see courses below) and completing their student teaching experience in a bilingual classroom. Candidates are responsible for meeting 20 hours of clinical field experience in bilingual school settings. A bilingual field supervisor will observe and provide feedback on students bilingual teaching practices.
In-Service Pathway. This pathway is for teachers that have already completed their preliminary teaching credential and would like to add on the Bilingual Authorization. In-Service students enroll in four online courses (see courses below) and complete 20 hours of clinical field experience in a bilingual school setting. In-Service students work with a bilingual faculty member to plan, record, and reflect on four lessons taught in their classroom in Spanish. If a bilingual placement is needed, our Bilingual Coordinator with assist with this placement.
