Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends,
It has been an honor to serve as Interim Dean for the College of Arts and Sciences this past year. Though it has been a challenging year, I have been encouraged and inspired by our faculty, staff, students and community members.
We were able to finish the spring quarter strongly, given extraordinarily difficult circumstances due to COVID-19. Our faculty and staff worked hard throughout the transition to provide excellent remote teaching and support, and our students put their best foot forward and showed a resilience that will serve them throughout their lives. While our campus is still closed, construction on the Sobrato Campus for Discovery and Innovation has resumed, and the University’s Resilience and Recovery Working Group is working hard to implement a careful and detailed plan to return, once it is safe. Amidst all of this, we still found ways to support our local community—for example, in March, the STEM departments donated more than 16,000 gloves that were no longer needed for labs to local healthcare organizations. Additionally, many of our friends and alumni have served on the front lines during the pandemic, with remarkable stories of dedication and sacrifice like that of Dr. MaryAnn Dakkak ’04 (Biology).
Another challenge we must face together is the racial violence and injustice that tragically persists in our country more than 50 years after the death of Dr. King and the promise of the Civil Rights movement, indeed after decades and centuries of Black American freedom struggles. At Santa Clara, and in the College in particular, we must acknowledge this unacceptable reality and find ways, small and large, to advocate for greater equality, accountability, and justice. We promise to do all that we can to ensure that racial inequality and injustice does not continue, and we join with you in demanding justice today and progress tomorrow.
Our amazing faculty and students continue their remarkable work, earning multiple awards along the way, as the entries below demonstrate. I am also proud to report that the College had a highly successful hiring season, attracting an exceptionally talented and diverse group of faculty who will teach and inspire the next generation of Santa Clara students.
I am thrilled to pass the baton to Daniel Press, who will begin his tenure as dean on July 1. I have immense confidence in his ability to lead us through these difficult times with care, concern, leadership, and innovation. The College is in good hands.
