Featured Course: SPAN 109 Spanish and the Community
Taught by Spanish Linguistics specialist Jill Pellettieri and Assistant Professor in Public Health Sonja Mackenzie, Spanish & the Community is an ELSJ course that partners with the Washington Elementary School and community in San José. Washington School serves a community with a high percentage of migrants from México and Central America, many of whom are undocumented. Students work with Spanish-speaking mothers, the school's principal, and the physician who runs the community health clinic on campus to develop a culturally and linguistically appropriate media/technology safety educational program for the school and the community. The San José Unified School District does not currently have a media safety curriculum for their schools, so our goal is to help Washington School become a model for the district.
