Being Multilingual

Languages and cultures have always fascinated and intrigued me. My mother taught me three languages as my firsts – so I never had a simple answer when asked what my first language was. I continued on to learn Spanish when I entered school in Preschool and Kindergarten, learning in a bilingual class environment until the sixth grade. At some point during that time, I heard, and fell in love with, Italian. I made myself a promise to learn it and be fluent by the time I graduated college. With all the classes of Italian I was taking, I ended up deciding to minor in the language, in addition to my Political Science major and International Business minor. Italian added on as my sixth spoken language, and fourth literate language. In addition to regular classes, I also interned in Milan and Paris after my first year of Italian with a Milanese event planning company, which was one of the best experiences I’ve had the opportunity to have.

After graduating from SCU in December 2016 in two and a quarter years, I succeeded in achieving my goal of being fluent in Italian, and still use it as often as I can. I now work as a Management Consulting Analyst at Accenture, and my knowledge of languages definitely proves as an asset with our global clientele and project scope. I hope to continue on to do a Masters in International Business in a few years, and potentially pick up a few other languages along the way. Until then, I am thankful for the color that yet another language has added to my life!
