Dear College Faculty and Staff,
I’ve been hearing such great news from you all lately that I had to share.
I want to congratulate Grace Stokes from the Chemistry and Biochemistry department on receiving the Henry Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award in support of her research on Quantification of Heavy Metal Ion Transport Across Bacterial Membranes. She is the fourth faculty member from her department to receive the award in the last five years! Wow.
I’d also like to recognize the History department and its undergraduate journal, Historical Perspectives, for taking first place in the 2021 Phi Alpha Theta Gerald D. Nash History Undergraduate Print Journal Competition. Again, wow! What an amazing accomplishment for our student editors Brandon Schultz ’21 (English, History) and Tegan Smith ’20 (History, Women’s and Gender Studies) and their mentors. I am proud to see this journal continue its record of excellence on a national scale—in addition to this year’s award, it has placed in the top three seven times since 2009!
Lastly, this week, I would like to congratulate Enrique Pumar (Sociology) who was recently appointed as Director for the Broadening Participation Program in the Social, Behavioral, and Economic Division of the National Science Foundation. Any who are familiar with the NSF know this is a great opportunity, and while we will miss Enrique on campus during his two-year appointment, we know Santa Clara will benefit from the knowledge he gains upon his return. Bravo!
I hope you all have a restorative break over the next week! I, myself, am looking forward to a small but in-person Thanksgiving dinner with family.
Daniel
