History Alum Daniel Perry '10 shares how studying History impacts his life as owner of the company Yonder Sky
"I launched my own sightseeing day tour company, Yonder Sky, in my hometown of Seattle in 2018. As the owner and guide, I take people from around the world to Washington's national parks and historical sites. Along the way, we discuss the history, geology, and culture of the region. I love sharing the history of this region with guests, and I make a point to talk about everything from the Native American people who stewarded this land to modern issues like homelessness. In the winter off-season, my partner and I enjoy traveling and exploring new places around the world.
Studying history nurtured my strong desire to be inquisitive and introspective. My freshman history professor took me aside after finals and encouraged me to focus my SCU time on ‘self-cultivation.’ I took that philosophy to heart at school and beyond, experimenting with different career paths ranging from educating high schoolers, cooking at an HIV day center, working with unhoused disabled adults, and now running my own tourism company. Whatever the future holds, I'll pursue it with the open-mindedness and intellectual curiosity of a historian."
