Dear Students, Alumni, and Friends of the History Department,
We are off to a great start in 2018!! Our students are thriving (even making a big splash at a national student conference), our faculty continue to produce cutting-edge scholarship and take on leadership positions, and our History alums are making the world a better place.
A special thanks to all of you who give so generously to the department. Your gifts make possible many opportunities for our students. We are all very grateful!!
Best wishes for a wonderful 2018, Nancy C. Unger, Department Chair

Two New Opportunities for Students |
New Student Research Support!
To continue our tradition of excellence, History majors and minors can now apply for grants to cover costs associated with their research projects such as mileage/gas to libraries, parking fees, photocopying and other related expenses—even airfare and accommodations in special cases. Send proposals to historydepartment@scu.edu.
History Internships!
The History Department seeks to identify internship opportunities for course credit. The first position we’ve identified, offered during Spring quarter 2018, even includes a stipend!
The Santa Clara Valley Science and Engineering Fair Association (SCVSEFA), seeks a History student to compile an oral, video, photo, timeline history of this organization.
Prerequisites for applicants include completion of HIST101 and Junior or Senior status. Time commitment is ten hours per week for 5-6 weeks at the beginning of the quarter. For more information, contact Dr. Matthew Newsom Kerr.
The College of Arts and Sciences will be providing stipends up to $5000 for summer research, internships, projects, and creative work opportunities. The application deadline is March 15th. Visit the REAL website to apply.

Professor Philippa Levine, Walter Prescott Webb Chair in History and Ideas at the University of Texas at Austin, gave a truly fascinating talk on the origins of Eugenics in a global context. She also connected this history to important questions facing biomedical ethics today. Thanks to Professor Newsom Kerr for arranging her visit!
