Dear ESS Community,
Winter quarter feels like it has just begun and we are now already more than halfway done. For our ESS alumni, I am sure you miss the fast-paced learning that goes on during the quarter system! This is an exciting time for us as many of our students are finding out about awards. ESS had two Rhode Scholar finalists- let’s give a big shout out to both Lauren Cloward ‘16 and Sean Reilly ‘16 (who received the award). The Rhodes fellowship is extremely competitive - to be nominated is quite an honor. This year we also have three ESS Fulbright semi-finalists- we will announce whether they have received awards in the coming months.
Whether they want to improve campus sustainability or travel to far-flung places to learn about sustainability, our ESS students and alumni continue to amaze us with their desire to change the world. Erin Ronald studied abroad with the DIS program in Denmark. She writes how she was heartened to see an example of an ecologically progressive society and is thinking about how she can bring back what she learned there to the United States. Zach Gianotti studied climate change in the Arctic and then presented his research results at the American Geologic Union meetings in New Orleans this past December. We also have alumni reports from Colleen Henn who works for The Surfrider Foundation and Lizzie Urie who is currently in the second year of a master’s program at U.C. Berkeley’s Goldman School of Public Policy. Our faculty members are continuing to produce important and relevant research.
