Dr. David E. Logothetti Teaching Award
In recognition for having established among colleagues and students a well-deserved reputation for an energetic, engaging, and effective teaching style, and having demonstrated the ability to motivate other teachers and learners.
In 2016, Associate Professor C.J. Gabbe brought his superlative teaching skills to the Environmental Studies and Sciences (ESS) Department to benefit students and faculty alike. His lively classroom sessions include a variety of teaching modalities that fully engage his students and receive consistent praise.
As one of C.J.’s many enthusiastic students stated, “I was never bored!" Other students noted their appreciation for 1-on-1 check-ins during class time, keeping group work moving thanks to well-planned timelines, and strong connections to current affairs and policies. Another student sums up his classroom success, saying, “The professor really made our learning the number one priority.”
C.J.’s colleagues in ESS have also benefited from his commitment to teaching excellence. Colleagues expressed gratitude for his collaborative development of shared course materials. He is respected for both his incorporation of new materials and his systematic approach to course design that is elegant, simple and nuanced. As noted by a colleague, C.J.’s attention on teaching as an intellectual project has greatly contributed to improving student learning within the department.
C.J. continues to improve upon his own teaching, as evidenced in his work as an associate in the Faculty Collaborative for Teaching Innovation. He organized Teaching CAFEs, shared Tuesday Teaching Tips, led new faculty cohorts, and supported faculty through the Association of College and University Educators (ACUE) program. With his strengths in inclusive, evidence-based teaching practices and faculty development, C.J. has elevated teaching success across the university.
Congratulations, C.J. Gabbe!
