On January 30th, the department hosted Dr. Lisa Pieraccini for a talk entitled “The Etruscans Outside the Box: Ancient and Modern Tomb Biographies”. Dr. Pieraccini is a member of the faculty of the History of Art Department, at UC Berkeley and is the Project Director of the Del Chiaro Center for Ancient Italian Studies. Her talk offered Santa Clara students, staff, and faculty an exploration of the history of Etruscan artifact collections and of the collection at Berkeley in particular, insight into new discoveries in Etruscan funerary artifacts, an analysis of the Etruscan elements of Egbert Ludovicus Viele’s bizarre revival tomb at West Point (pictured), and an overview of her own experimental archaeology involving exploding eggs.
