Dear Colleagues —
Thank you for your warm welcome as I began my journey here at Santa Clara University this past month. I've already engaged in many exciting conversations across campus about the bold and promising future of the Career Center. More immediately, as we prepare to welcome the largest first-year class in history, we are ready to play an instrumental role in achieving excellent and equitable career outcomes for our students.
As you will see over the coming months and years, to build a more connected and engaged experience for all students, we will rely on three broad strategies:
- Predict – We will design methods to collect and analyze quantitative and qualitative data to surface gaps and inequitable outcomes across a matrix of factors. This will enable us to predict and pivot to where our services will have the greatest impact.
- Intrude – We will work closely with campus partners to implement an intrusive engagement model to ensure that every student accesses our services and resources. This will enable us to better and more equitably serve all students.
- Introduce – We will introduce students to alumni and employers and actively engage in the university and Silicon Valley ecosystem for the purposes of networking, mentorship and professional development. This will enable to achieve career outcomes at scale.
Over the next several months, I'll be sharing more details about our goals and strategies for this year and beyond. With that said, as you can imagine, the Career Center cannot do this work alone. I am glad to see that there is already a strong "career everywhere" mentality here: each of us contributing to our students' career and professional development. In that spirit, I invite your ideas and suggestions on how the Career Center can deliver and scale for ever greater impact.
I am excited to join you here at Santa Clara University and work together to deliver on the promise of higher education: a good job, social capital, and economic mobility in pursuit of a more humane, just and sustainable world for all.
Thank you,
|

The Career Center Team
Please allow me to (re)introduce the Career Center team. We are dynamic, wonderfully diverse and dedicated to our students. Assembled within this office are subject matter experts and current and future thought leaders in the areas of vocation discernment, career and professional development, networking and mentorship, resumes and cover letters, job search strategies, employer relations and partnerships, recruiting and talent acquisition and more.
We are always ready to collaborate and partner. If you're curious about our work and/or would like to work with us, please reach out or stop by and visit us in Benson Memorial Center.

Success Stories
The Career Center team continued to work hard over the summer break. Here's two select examples of what we've accomplished.
Career Center to present at MPACE Conference
Melissa Thiriez and Chris Harris along with Priscilla Vallejo at UC Berkeley have been invited to present at the Mountain Pacific Association of Colleges & Employers' annual conference this December. Their presentation will focus on the innovative Diversity Works Expo & Awards produced and hosted by the Career Center each winter/spring.

Staffing Update
Many of you know Jen Ferrari, Associate Director of Career Education. Not only is she a two-time alumna of SCU, she is also the longest-serving staff member in the Career Center. We are thankful to her for serving as interim director this past year. So it is bittersweet for me to share with you that Jen has decided to explore and pursue new opportunities (and enjoy some well-earned vacation and rest). |
|
This is her final week as a full-time employee; however, she has graciously agreed to stay on in a part-time, fixed-term capacity to support our team through the start of the fall quarter, so you will continue to see her around campus and on Zoom. More details to come regarding farewell get-together. In the meantime, please join me in thanking her for her many years of service and contributions to Santa Clara University.
I will soon commence a search for her successor, but in the meantime, please direct questions to me or Melissa Thiriez, Associate Director of Employer Connections, at mthiriez@scu.edu.
