Dear Colleagues —
I am thrilled to share that we hosted a successful second annual Career Clarity Retreat on January 4-5 at the beautiful Vallombrosa Center in Menlo Park.
Twenty-six students participated and enjoyed a weekend full of reflection and discernment activities expertly facilitated by Vania Tong, Myriam Bartz, Bich Nguyen-Hamilton and Victor Lemus with support from Anna Fleming and Ellen Kim.

What students are saying:
"I think I will no longer be as stressed as I was during periods of change. Beforehand, I dreaded change & transition, but by understanding it's inevitable & not the end of the world has let me open up and be willing to seek other things as well. Just because option A is done doesn't mean I'm done."
—
"I felt extremely supported by everyone on this retreat, but more specifically the other student attendees. ... Their insight and wisdom made me really excited to continue growing into myself and really water my own flowers"
—
Like last year, we collaborated with both Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and Campus Ministry with an agenda focused on giving students tools and strategies to navigate feelings of stress, anxiety, and ambiguity when thinking about their career and their future. The retreat also included a panel discussion with distinguished Santa Clara alumni Molly Walker '16 (Marketing), Jeff Jacobs '89 (Psychology), Daniel Mendoza '15 (Web Design and Engineering), and Karla De La Torre '09, JD '14 (Political Science, Law).
Financially, this retreat was made possible by a grant from the Division of Mission and Ministry and additional funds provided by Campus Ministry, and so we'd like to extend a special thank you to Mike Nuttall, Aaron Willis, Fr. John McGarry, SJ and Victor Lemus for their support.
Congratulations to Vania Tong, Associate Director of Career Development and staff lead for this retreat, for your excellent leadership and your inspired vision of centering and meeting the many intersecting needs of our students.
Curious to learn more about the retreat? Email Vania Tong at vtong@scu.edu.
As always, I look forward to working together to deliver on the promise of higher education for all of our students: a good job, social capital, and economic mobility in pursuit of a more humane, just and sustainable world.

Industry Meetups Connect 100+ Students with Wide Range of Companies
The Career Center's Employer Relations team recently hosted three back-to-back-to-back industry meetups that connected 100+ students with more than a dozen different companies.

On Tuesday, January 21, we hosted the Healthcare and Life Sciences Meetup (co-planned by the Biomedical Engineering Society and co-sponsored by Rho Psi Eta and the Pre-Health Club), followed on Wednesday, January 22 by the Public Sector & Government Meetup, followed on Thursday, January 23 by our second annual City of Santa Clara and Silicon Valley Power Meetup (in collaboration with the Center for Sustainability).
Across these three events, students networked with representatives from employers such as Bayer, Berkeley Pharma Tech, U.S. Army San Francisco Medical Recruiting Station, the State of California's Employment Development Department (EDD), the Office of Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren, the Jesuit Volunteer Corps (JVC), the City of San José, the City of Santa Clara, and more.
Kudos to the Employer Relations team—Melissa Thiriez, Andrew Gupton, and Amanuel Bizuneh—for planning and executing a successful series of events.

New Appointment Type: ChatGPT for Your Job Search

This image was created using ChatGPT |

Shiv Jhalani '26 Peer Career Advisor |
The Career Development team is offering a new appointment type for students to learn how to use ChatGPT for their job search. This appointment type was developed in collaboration with Shiv Jhalani '25, a Computer Science major and one of our long-time Peer Career Advisors (PCA). Shiv has extensive experience using ChatGPT for his own job search, such as tailoring his resume for specific roles and writing professional messages for networking.
Shiv and our new graduate career development intern, Pulkit Gupta '25, will help us pilot this appointment type over the winter and spring quarter.
We recognize that there are a wide range of opinions on the use of ChatGPT and AI. Our goal in offering this appointment type is to learn what questions students have about AI and how they are currently using it for their job search. We are also open to input from the campus community on student use of AI in the job search process—please reach out if you have opinions, ideas, suggestions or relevant resources to share!
Questions? Email Colleen Withers, Director of Career Development and Campus Integration, at cwithers@scu.edu.
