Study Abroad: Edinburgh, Scotland
Do you have a favorite class that you are taking? Why?
I am enjoying my Organizational Behavior or Management class that I am taking this semester. The instructor is an experienced researcher and blends her own work into the material well and gives great insight into the application of psychology in business management and how people act within organizations.
What do you like about your program/university?
The University of Edinburgh draws students from around the world which makes for a very diverse student body which I enjoy as I have been able to interact with people who I would have never met otherwise. What I like most about my study abroad program is how supportive they are of their students and their wellbeing. They also organize trips within Scotland—two of which I’ve had the chance to go on—that have been educational and beautiful.
What has been your favorite place that you visited so far or favorite part about your city? Why?
My favorite part of Edinburgh is how incorporated nature is into the urban environment and the surrounding area. There are three extinct volcanoes throughout the city that lay the ground for where the castle and old town are situated, a hike with a 360° view of the city can be found, and a hill where a half-completed Parthenon replica lies. These all provide for quick and breathtaking escapes from the busyness of the town.
What advice would you give to the 2024 abroad students?
My advice would be to seek out discomfort during your time abroad and immerse yourself in whatever culture(s) you encounter. As my travel writing class teacher says, ‘Try to be a traveler, not a tourist.’ Studying abroad is a privilege and a wonderful opportunity to learn about people and how they experience life as well as to contrast how life is different from in America. Therefore I would suggest to take advantage of these opportunities as best you can.
