Study Abroad: Milan, Italy
Do you have a favorite class that you are taking? Why?
Community Based Learning (ELSJ) - I have the opportunity to volunteer at a local soup kitchen, where I meet many locals. Additionally, I teach English to high school students and play basketball and volleyball with them. I am also paired with a host family, with whom I have weekly dinners and spend time going on trips, attending soccer games, or just exploring Milan. This class has really helped me immerse myself further in local life, and I have met so many wonderful people through this experience.
What do you like about your program/university?
The IES school is very modern, and the classrooms have a clean, pleasant aesthetic. Additionally, all of my teachers are very friendly and accommodating as we adjust to our new life here. I appreciate how the program helps us immerse ourselves in daily Milan life before classes begin. We have a two-week Italian immersion period, which felt like a bootcamp, helping us learn the basics of the language to order food and greet others in Italian.
What has been your favorite place that you visited so far or favorite part about your city? Why?
My favorite place I’ve visited so far has been Budapest, Hungary. The food was absolutely amazing, and there were thrift shops on almost every corner. We were constantly on the go during this trip and always had a new activity to do. My favorite part was taking the gondola up to the Budapest Castle District, where we visited several museums and enjoyed a stunning view of the entire city. Highly recommend!
What advice would you give to the 2024 abroad students?
Studying abroad was a much bigger challenge than I expected. However, once I adjusted, it became a pivotal moment of growth and maturity in my life. The biggest takeaway I’ve gained is to slow down and say 'yes,' pushing yourself outside your comfort zone to make the most of opportunities like studying abroad. You are going to meet so many different people and explore a new part of the world, so make sure to take every day as it comes and live in the present. Talk to study abroad alumni to better prepare yourself and hear how to make the most of your experience.
