Pavi Dobaria: My Professional Growth and Finding the Right Path

My Professional Growth and Finding the Right Path
Pavi Dobaria

As an underclassman, navigating career growth and figuring out the “right path” can feel overwhelming. Reflecting on my own journey, I’ve learned that progress is far from linear. Career growth comes from taking advantage of opportunities, especially when they are out of your comfort zone.

Entering freshman year, most people aren’t exactly sure what career to pursue, though it might seem like it. Personally, I knew I was broadly interested in finance and real estate but had no idea how to start narrowing down my options. I explored organizations on campus and eventually found Alpha Kappa Psi, a business fraternity on campus which turned out to be one of the most impactful decisions of my college career. Through this organization, I quickly developed my professional skills and gained access to an immense network of older peers who became mentors to me. These older friends were essential in guiding me through the challenges of narrowing down my desired career path and navigating the recruiting process.

One of my favorite parts of my professional development journey has been engaging in coffee chats. Whether it’s with alumni, professionals, or peers, these informal conversations have provided me with insights into different industries, company cultures, and career paths. I’ve found that people are often more than willing to share their experiences with a student, as long as you approach them with genuine curiosity and willingness to learn. Beyond the professional advice, coffee chats have also been an opportunity to connect on a personal level. Many of my conversations veered into less professional topics, such as hobbies, post-grad advice, or even shared interests like restaurant recommendations! These moments reminded me that building relationships isn’t just about careers – it's about finding common ground and learning from people as individuals. Those lighter chats often left me feeling inspired and re-energized. The initial steps of putting yourself out there and reaching out can seem daunting at first, but with enough repetition, you will feel yourself getting more comfortable and developing your networking skills.

While finance was my primary interest, I also explored a variety of clubs that weren’t directly related to business, including being a Program Coordinator and Department Coordinator for SCCAP (Santa Clara Community Action Program), and serving on ASG (Associated Student Government). Though these experiences weren’t directly related to my chosen career path, I found that participating in experiences that genuinely interest you can be just as valuable as ones designed to build your resume. They reinforced the importance of giving back to the community and significantly strengthened my leadership skills.

In reflection on my career progression, I’ve realized that growth comes from a combination of intentional exploration, seeking guidance, and stepping outside of your comfort zone. Every experience - whether directly tied to your career goals or not - adds value and shaped you both personally and professionally. By embracing opportunities, staying curious, and building meaningful connections, you can navigate the uncertainties of career development and uncover paths you never anticipated. While the journey might not always be linear, it's the lessons learned along the way that truly define your growth.
