So you’ve been able to secure an internship for yourself. First of all, congratulations! The internship search and application process can typically come with a lot of anxiety and uncertainty, so give yourself a huge pat on the back for making it through successfully. Now that you’ve accepted your offer, you may be wondering what comes next. This period of time between now and the first day of your internship is your chance to prepare yourself for what’s to come so that you can be successful.

Start by reviewing your offer letter and position description. It’s important that you get familiar with the nature of your role and some of the general responsibilities that will come with it. This information is typically included in the offer letter but in the case that it is not, reach out to your recruiter and ask for more information. 

Next, set up some one-on-one time with your supervisor. This meeting is for all of your logistical and general questions about your internship. Ask your supervisor about some of the work that you’ll be involved in, details about the company environment and culture, or what the workstyle of someone who’s successful in your role looks like. Be sure to note any advice or information that you feel is important, and ask clarifying questions.

Once you have a clear understanding of what is expected from you over the course of your internship, I recommend shifting your focus and thinking about what this experience will give you. Give some thought to what you want to get out of your internship experience, and professional areas that you hope to grow in. Consider learning objectives and come up with a learning plan before you arrive on your first day. 

Lastly, remember that your upcoming internship is first and foremost a learning opportunity! Don’t stress about not understanding some of the concepts or aspects associated with the work that you’ll be doing. The most important goal for your supervisor is to provide you with exposure to your desired field so you can gain firsthand experience that will hopefully lead to deeper understanding, and a better sense of what work you enjoy doing.
