How to Take a Professional Headshot on a Budget

In the world of business, having a solid professional headshot is key. It’s the first thing you notice on a Linkedin profile and you will find yourself using it constantly throughout your student and professional career. However, not everyone is willing to pay for studio lighting or a professional camera. So, the next best thing is taking a professional headshot on a budget. All you need is a phone, a friend, and a decent background.

First, you will need an adequate phone camera that can focus well, to give that blurred background effect. I personally like to use the portrait mode on my iPhone, which works well. Anyone can take your picture, just make sure they level the camera to your face and stand close enough to capture your torso and above. As for your pose, most headshots are taken with your shoulders slightly turned to the side, while your head is turned toward the camera. Think of posing for a yearbook picture. Another option is the infamous power pose of crossing your arms. Whichever pose you decide, it is important to have good posture and let your confident side shine through.

Another important part of taking a headshot is choosing the right outfit. Business formal is usually recommended. A solid color suit or blazer over a dress shirt or blouse is a safe bet. Also, consider accessorizing with a simple necklace or tie, for a personal touch.

Lastly, choosing a background is half the battle. Luckily, Santa Clara University offers great photo spots, such as the Mission Garden or around the De Saisset Museum. I recommend going outside, since the sun provides free and flattering lighting. However, steer clear of direct sunlight, to avoid squinting, and instead look for shady spots or position the sun behind you. A subtle background is recommended as well, just to keep the main focus on you. From my experience, it’s always a good idea to take multiple pictures, changing up your stance, and using different backgrounds and lighting, just to have a variety to choose from.

So grab a friend, put on your favorite business attire, and head out to take an awesome headshot!
