DJ Hoang: Building My Professional Journey: Lessons Learned Along the Way

DJ reflects on how campus involvement and mentorship shaped his professional growth.

As I reflect on my professional journey so far, my growth has mostly been influenced by what opportunities were sought, which communities I put myself out there for, and many lessons learned through it all. From building my network within Delta Sigma Pi, a professional co-ed business fraternity, finding my identity of culture and community with the Vietnamese Student Association, to juggling multiple roles on campus – the contributions of each are equal toward making me the professional that I am today.

Delta Sigma Pi gave me the opportunity to develop some key soft skills, including networking, leadership, and time management. Workshops, events, and professional panels taught me how to present myself confidently and build meaningful connections with others. This is where I built my on-campus professional network that would later serve as a foundation for career opportunities and mentorship.

In contrast, my involvement with the Vietnamese Student Association allowed me to deepen my understanding of what it means to work in diverse communities while also celebrating my cultural heritage. Organizing events and working with others taught me the importance of flexibility, inclusivity, and effective communication – skills highly regarded in any workplace.

I also engaged in a number of jobs and roles on campus to gain experience in handling different tasks and assignments. Whether it was managing projects, helping out peers, or working on deadlines, these experiences taught me how to be successful in fast-paced environments while juggling a busy schedule. Learning how to prioritize, stay organized, and maintain focus during hectic times has been invaluable to my personal and professional growth.

Beyond these organizations and roles, I invested time in coffee chats with alumni and older students who had navigated the paths I aspired to follow. These were not only instructive but also empowering conversations in which I learned about different industries, discovered potential career paths, and even received referrals that opened doors to further opportunities. These moments taught me an important lesson: never underestimate the value of asking for help. It is always better to ask questions and seek early communication rather than struggle silently.

These experiences have seen me grow into a relationship, communicative, and driven individual. I'm grateful for the resources to which I have had access, communities that have supported me, and mentors who guided me through it. I will carry these lessons with me as I head out to explore other opportunities and are ready to meet whatever challenges may come my way.
