Accounting Major

Areas of Interest at SCU and Leavey: Math is one of my strengths, which is why I am strongly considering an accounting major. I am particularly interested in applying accounting principles to the agricultural sector since I have a passion for agriculture and ranching. Over the next year, I plan to continue exploring other majors and minors within the Leavey School of Business. For exmaple, I am curious about minoring in Chinese and am looking forward to taking courses like "Chinese 103: Business Culture in Chinese-speaking World."
What are your SCU and Leavey activities/general hobbies: I am very involved in SuperTonic, Santa Clara's oldest acapella group. We have performed at important school events such as the State of the Union address and the Golden Circle. One of the things I find so unique about this acapella group is how we truly operate as a team. I am also involved in the Women in Business club on campus, and enjoy attending meetings that help build my professional growth. Off campus I spend a lot of my free time at the barn, where I ride horses.
What internship/employment opportunities have you taken advantage of at Leavey? As a first year I am still learning about internship and career planning. However, I have taken advantage of the seminars and internship preparation events that I hear about in emails to prepare myself for internship applications this fall.
Favorite Leavey Class and Why?  My favorite Leavey class so far was BUS70 Contemporary Business Issues with Mike Holubar. This course is one of the first courses taken by freshman in the Leavey School of Business, and introduces students to the different sectors of business. I especially enjoyed the many guest lecturers that my professor invited to class. It was so valuable to hear from so many experienced individuals in different fields of business.
What made you choose to attend LSB? The main reasons that I was drawn to the Leavey School of Business are the small class sizes and excellent professors. As a freshman my classes have never been larger than 20-30 people--which is almost unheard of. My professors know every student by name, and it is incredibly easy to build personal relationships with them. The small class sizes also foster community and teamwork among my classmates which I know is incredibly beneficial in building my network. I also value that SCU is a liberal arts school, meaning I take diverse courses which gives me a very well rounded education.
What advice you wish you had while applying to college? I recommend taking every opportunity to speak with current students of a college and hear firsthand about both the aspects they love and those they wish were different. It is also really important to discover what aspects of a college truly matter to you, rather than getting overly attached to a specific school. At the end of the day choosing a college is all about finding the environment where you think you will feel the most at home!
