Marketing Major
Port Chester, NY
Areas of Interest at SCU and Leavey: Within the Leavey School of Business, I am interested in the intersection between business and sports and how teams market and manage sports teams and their athletes. I am currently a marketing major, but I am also interested in management and analytics. I hope that what I am involved in on campus can help me continue to explore this field!
What are your SCU and Leavey activities/general hobbies: Along with being a new Leavey Ambassador, I am a member of the Women in Business Club, the Sports Business Club, Women's Club Soccer, and an off-campus sorority. Most of my hobbies center around business and sports, so it is not surprising that outside of school, I love to play soccer, go for runs, and go to pilates. I also love reading on the beach in the summer!
What internship/employment opportunities have you taken advantage of at Leavey? I have taken advantage of the resources our amazing Career Center at Santa Clara offers through the opportunity to meet and learn from professionals who work for the San Francisco 49ers at the Students at the Stadium event. I was able to attend this event at Levi Stadium with hundreds of other college students from the Bay Area to gain tools and connections in the sports industry the minute I stepped foot on campus. We listened to professionals on the 49ers team and even got to meet one of the players and hear from an athlete's perspective. I hope to take advantage of many more Career Center opportunities and internships in the future!
Favorite Leavey Class and Why? My favorite Leavey class was Business 70, Contemporary Business Issues, with Professor McKay. We never just read from a textbook; We immediately dove into real life business applications like the “Bronco Tank” competition we all competed in, which challenged me to tap into my entrepreneurial side like the professionals do on the show Shark Tank. I also was able to learn so much about all the different fields of business to give myself a foundation to hone in on what I enjoyed the most. This class was the perfect intro to the Leavey Business School during my first quarter and made me extremely excited for what else is to come.
What made you choose to attend Leavey? Coming from New York, I wanted a business school that would make me feel at home on the opposite side of the country, and the Leavey School of Business has done just that. The minute I stepped foot on campus during my preview day at the business school, I could feel the supportive energy surrounding the school. While it checked all my boxes on paper, I was even more comfortable with my decision after meeting the professors and the student ambassadors. Everyone cares so much about what they do and everyone wants the best for you. I also felt extremely supported as a woman in business and with the opportunities that the Bay Area offers in the sports business field. In the immediate vicinity of Santa Clara, there are numerous sports teams in baseball, soccer, football, hockey, and so much more. While I was also drawn to the proximity of Silicon Valley, the numerous sports teams in the area was what truly drew me in.
What advice you wish you had while applying to college? One piece of advice I wish I had while I was applying to college would be to ignore the acceptance rates and what other peoples' perceptions are. When you step foot on campus at the school you are meant to be at, you will get that feeling. When I would talk about Santa Clara to my friends and family before I decided, they all told me that they could hear the excitement in my voice compared to when I talked about other schools. Pick the school that you get excited to tell people about because that is where your heart is and where you were meant to be.
