Accounting Major, Marketing Minor
Castro Valley, CA

Areas of Interest at SCU and Leavey: I am currently a sophomore accounting major with a marketing minor. Through my time here at SCU, I hope to continue growing my passion for business and service while also making long-lasting connections with my peers and community!
What are your SCU and Leavey activities/general hobbies: Apart from being a Leavey ambassador, on campus I'm involved with Alpha Phi Omega, our school's service fraternity, as their VP of Leadership, and Clara Craft Club as their Membership officer. I am also a part of the Women In Business, SCU Sports Business, and the Chinese Student Association. Outside of school, some of my hobbies include arts & crafts, watching movies & TV shows, exploring with friends, and going to concerts!
What internship/employment opportunities have you taken advantage of at Leavey? Opportunities that I have taken advantage of at Leavey have been attending the career events that the different organizations hold. One of my favorite events was the Meet the Firms event held by the SCU Accounting Association. At this event, I was able to introduce myself and network with professionals, as well as partners from local accounting firms in the Bay Area. Through talking to them, I was able to learn more about each individual company, get free swag, and learn about future internship opportunities. Attending unique events like these helps me create meaningful connections while also providing me with knowledge that can be used in future careers.
Favorite Leavey Class and Why?  Although this was the most challenging class I’ve taken at SCU so far, ACTG 11 was definitely the most rewarding. I took this course with Professor Matthew Cedergren, who is easily one of the most rigorous teachers for this class. Since it is the first accounting class students take, the amount of hours you have to spend studying and comprehending the concepts is a lot, but you genuinely learn so much from the practice. Having Professor Cedergren was definitely a bonus because you can not only tell that he is passionate about what he teaches, but that he also has real-world experience that he can share with his students. I really appreciated how he set up his lectures and that he was an overall generous teacher.
What made you choose to attend Leavey? Besides its well-known reputation around the nation, what drew me to Leavey was the environment and friendly people surrounding it. I was lucky enough to tour the school before committing to SCU, and the kindness that I encountered briefly from the students was so genuine. The idea of walking into Lucas no matter the time of day and instantly recognizing people I've had class with or am friends with felt so comforting to me. Also, I loved that the class sizes here were smaller and similar to the ones I had in high school. I’ve always been drawn to class sizes of less than 30 since you get to work closer with your peers and professors, and I was able to find that here at Leavey.
What advice you wish you had while applying to college? I would have told myself to not stress so much on knowing exactly what I want to accomplish or do in the future. I was convinced that whatever I chose to major in, I’d be stuck doing for the rest of my life, and that’s definitely not the fact. It’s so difficult to know what you want to commit your life to without experimenting and experiencing different courses or subjects, but that’s what college is for. It’s a time to see what works for you and what doesn’t, and even then you can still not know what to do, and that’s ok. It’s always good to remember that not everything is concrete and that you should take your time to find what makes you happy.
