Accounting Information Systems Major
Alhambra, CA
Areas of Interest at SCU and Leavey: I'm majoring in Accounting and Information Systems with a potential minor in Economics. I'm hoping to pursue tech assurance or financial analytics in the future, for I'm interested in the intersection of business and technology.
What are your SCU and Leavey activities/general hobbies: Aside from Leavey Ambassadors, I'm involved in Santa Cara Investment Fund, Investment Club, Chess Club, Taiwanese Student Association, and Quant Finance Club. Some of my hobbies include hiking, tennis, chess, guitar, and gym.
What internship/employment opportunities have you taken advantage of at Leavey? There are many opportunities to explore, especially as a first year. The main ones I've taken advantage of are Career Fairs, Handshake, Career Center, Coffee Chats, and Santa Clara Investment Fund.
Favorite Leavey Class and Why? My favorite class was Busn 70 with Professor Holubar. The class was a great introduction to Business as a whole. It was very practical and my professor invited many guest speakers to talk about their careers. Another fun activity in the class is the Mike's Bikes simulation. This allowed for strategic decisions that mimic those of a real company. It was a great hands on learning opportunity.
What made you choose to attend Leavey? The key factors in my decision were community, location, and class size. I believe that the most important aspect of any place is the people you meet. As the saying goes, "It's not about what you know, but who you know." Santa Clara has a unique and diverse community, with individuals who contribute immensely to the experience. This became especially evident when speaking with upperclassmen and current students. Additionally, being in the heart of Silicon Valley is a major advantage, as I aspire to pursue opportunities at the intersection of technology and finance. Simply being in this environment opens countless doors. Finally, class size was a crucial factor for me. Smaller classes foster deeper connections with both faculty and peers, creating a more engaging and supportive learning environment. SCU, and specifically the Leavey School of Business, is truly a hidden gem—there is so much to explore, and the possibilities are endless.
What advice you wish you had while applying to college? You'll be fine. Something I've come to realize is that no matter where you go, you will naturally surround yourself with like minded peers, and pursue passions you genuinely have a interest for. It may definitely seem stressful in the moment trying to decide the next four years of your life but honestly, college is what you make out of it as cliche as that sounds. Take a step back and breathe. Instead of worrying about rankings or others' opinions, focus on finding the right fit for you. Visit campuses, observe student life, and ask yourself—can you see yourself thriving there? Also, don't hesitate to reach out to current students for real insights beyond brochures and rankings. Students tend to give you the most authentic insight. Ultimately, wherever you go, you’ll find your people and passions. Trust yourself, enjoy the journey, and maybe you’ll even become a Bronco one day.
