When I was a freshman in Santa Clara University, I was uncertain about what organizations to join to meet people and make friends. It’s always a hard decision to make since the people you surround yourself with show a lot about who you are. Especially in college where your friends are likely to be in your life for a long period of time. This was around the time I learned about the concept of business fraternities. These are co-ed professional organizations that help prepare you for the professional world. I was eager to jumpstart my career through whatever means that entailed so I joined one of the two business fraternities on campus to learn more about professionalism. However, what I didn’t expect along the way was meeting my best friends that I admire and that motivated me to work harder. 

I was fortunate enough to find an organization of people that I wanted to be like with skills and interests that aligned with my long term goals. These people helped equip me with important soft skills for the work industry but also made me recognize what major I wanted to pursue. They were the push that I needed in my college career that made me start networking with professionals in industries I was interested in and apply for internships that would help me in the future. They also became my go-to lunch buddies and were the people I had late night talks with. I’m grateful to have such great mentors but also friends in my life that truly look out for me in my personal and professional life. It was a rare opportunity that I certainly won’t take for granted.
