Maya Safadi: Finding Your Fit

As college students, we’re all too familiar with the classic “what’s your major?” We get asked that question pretty much daily. It becomes seemingly such an important piece of our identities as students.

As college students, we’re all too familiar with the classic “what’s your major?”.  We get asked that question pretty much daily.  It becomes seemingly such an important piece of our identities as students.  So much weight and pressure are put on choosing a major, which is a daunting task for a high school student to do without having much familiarity taking classes in the different subject areas.

I was so nervous about choosing a major while applying to colleges.  I did excessive amounts of research on the career opportunities and pathways for each major. My parents always stressed how important it was to pick the right major.  I felt so worried that I would make a mistake and wouldn’t be able to change it.

But Leavey School of Business changed all of that.  Once I started talking to advisors and looking at the curriculum, I realized something amazing: I didn’t need to worry at all.  I found out that all LSB students are undeclared coming in, and did not even need to choose a major until the end of sophomore year, and that in those two years, I’d be taking some classes in each major category so that I would know what it was like.  I’d be able to find my fit before having to declare.  What a relief!

My sophomore year, I had narrowed it down to Economics or Finance major.  I took my first finance class and realized that economics was for me, after loving it in high school but being curious about the other areas of business that I hadn’t experienced, too.  I declared in winter quarter.

So, if you’re feeling a little major anxiety like I did, trust me when I say, you have the time and the flexibility to truly find what you love.  You do not need to have it all figured out on day one. Not to mention, the LSB community does a great job at exposing you to all different kinds of career paths and options that come with each major.  You’ll meet so many interesting professors and learn where their college careers have taken them. And, you’ll get a very well-rounded business education in the process.  So relax, take it all in, and don’t sweat it!  You will find your fit.
