Marina Menendez, Events at LSB
This year, during winter quarter I was looking through the daily emails sent out to students when I came across a posting for a finance career panel. This was an opportunity to meet and listen to speakers who come directly from companies like Google, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, etc. As a freshman and an Undeclared Business major I thought it would be a nice way to get to know more about what people with Finance degrees go on to do after graduation. During the panel many people asked questions about what the speakers do at work on a daily basis. What surprised me was that each of them had very different answers. Although they all worked in “Finance” they each had unique job descriptions and served each of their companies differently. After the panel I had the opportunity to speak to a couple of the speakers, and after hearing that I was Undeclared they encouraged me to gain as much and exposure to Finance as I could before deciding to major in it. While walking back to my dorm I realized that the hour I spent in that room was extremely beneficial for me. Hearing firsthand what can be done with a Finance degree not only made me want to actively pursue Finance as a possible major, it also allowed me to see that I could be taking advantage of more opportunities similar to the panel. The Leavey School of Business has events such as this one on almost a weekly basis. While taking classes and learning about each respective business field is very beneficial, I definitely think that taking part in events like the Careel Panel are equally as helpful for deciding on a major.
