Malika Singh, Alpha Kappa Psi
Take a left. Now a right. Another left, right, right, and finally, left. These directions are much like my college career: a long windy journey to reach my ultimate decision for my future. I started my college career as a biology major from my previous love of AP biology. However, upon coming to campus, I wanted to diversify my experiences.
I looked to Alpha Kappa Psi, a co-ed professional business fraternity on campus that accepts all majors. It is a community my sister found during her time at Santa Clara. Struggling to find my place in the first few weeks at school, I attended rush in hopes of finding a similar family my sister had found. To my surprise, all of the brothers I had met at the rush events made me feel welcome! I followed through with the week, eventually receiving a bid. During six weeks of pledging, I acquired more business acumen than I had before. After all, I had no prior business experience to begin with! I learned how to interview, build a resume, and most influential of all, build important and long lasting connections. My pledge class bonded immediately and I have friendships I know will last a lifetime. I found a home within the fraternity and I feel this with my brothers to this day.
AKPsi served as my road map. It exposed me to a subject that I had no previous experience in and showed me what type of future I wanted. I switched my major to Accounting and Information Systems the following year and haven’t looked back since.
