Katie Eng: My Summer Internship

My summer internship at Unity helped me learn so much about the gaming technology industry, and the projects I worked on and the experiences I had were unforgettable.

I had the privilege of interning at Unity Technologies, one of the world’s leading innovators in real-time 3D, virtual reality, and gaming technology this past summer as a Content Marketing Intern. It was an unforgettable experience that helped me grow both professionally and personally, and undoubtedly will mold what my career will look like for the rest of my life.

I was lucky enough to relocate to San Francisco for the summer to work in person at Unity’s headquarters, located in the heart of the Financial District. People tend to have mixed feelings about the Golden City, but I absolutely fell in love with it and its unique charm, architecture, and people (not to mention its extraordinary food.) While my internship was “hybrid,” meaning I had the chance to work both remotely and in person, I tried to go everyday to create personal connections and get the true office experience.

My responsibility for the summer was to help create marketing and sales enablement content to generate awareness and revenue for Unity’s Digital Twin business. I was tasked with meaningful projects that made a direct impact across multiple teams, something I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to work on. I was even trusted with writing an entire blog from beginning to end about an arcade bar in Arizona that utilized digital twins for spatial optimization and analysis - you can read it on Unity’s website here.

Over my 10 week internship, my industry knowledge expanded vastly. I had the privilege to expand past my initial jurisdiction within the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction space and branch off into other sectors as Government and Aerospace, Computer Vision, Machine Learning, and ATM (automotive, transportation, and manufacturing.) I got to sit into client meetings, attend company town halls, team syncs, and observe first-hand what it’s like to work in marketing at a large, publicly held tech company spearheading metaverse innovation.

I can attribute my phenomenal time at Unity to the brilliant and hardworking people I met. I was blessed with an amazingly supportive team who welcomed me wholeheartedly despite my short time at the company. They even wrote me a virtual “Wisdom Wall” (on google docs) with advice and words of encouragement on National Intern day. It was an incredibly thoughtful and wonderful surprise. I also was lucky enough to form close friendships with the other interns who worked at the San Francisco office. Meeting to socialize during lunchtime and sneak a quick game of ping pong was something I looked forward to every day.

I look upon my summer at Unity in San Francisco with nothing but fond memories. The 10 weeks passed by in a blink of an eye, but I had a wealth of knowledge and projects to show for it. I never would have guessed that several months before, when I was applying to every marketing internship job listing I could find on the internet, that I would have ended up at such an incredible place. I hope to end up back in beautiful San Francisco after graduation and continue exploring the many nooks and crannies that live within the city.
