Michael Schermann : How to Get the Science into the Data Science

OMIS Professor Michael Schermann spoke at a recent Intel Artificial Intelligence Meetup about data science and how it magnifies philosophical issues that have been debated for more than two thousand years.

Michael Schermann, assistant professor of Operations Management and Information Systems in the Leavey School of Business, had the opportunity to present at a recent Intel Artificial Intelligence Meetup in Santa Clara. He spoke about data science and its potential to radically change people’s world perception, while also discussing longstanding philosophical issues which are magnified by data science.

“Instead of focusing entirely on improving the accuracy of our models, we should try to destroy them once in awhile,” said Professor Schermann. “Destroying our models helps us to stay critical. After all, the famous statistics mantra 'All models are wrong but some are useful’ also applies to data science.”
