Kirthi Kalyanam : Gymboree filing for bankruptcy : San Francisco Chronicle
Kirthi Kalyanam, L.J. Skaggs Distinguished Professor and director of the Retail Management Institute, was mentioned in a San Francisco Chronicle article surrounding Gymboree’s second bankruptcy filing in just two years. According to Kalyanam, Gymboree’s retail concept simply could not match up to other retailers like Gap who use a mass-market approach. This combined with their “underdeveloped” online presence helps explain some of the reasons for their inevitable downfall.
“Gymboree simply couldn’t make money based on the retail concept they were after,” said Kirthi Kalyanam, in the article. “Other retailers like Gap (and) Children’s Place are much more mass-market oriented than Gymboree ever was, and are doing well.”
