Hersh Shefrin, the Mario L. Belotti Professor of Finance, recently wrote a piece for Forbes in which he questioned how disturbed President Trump’s mindset must be to justify such controversial climate change policies. He points out that there is a serious gap between the mainstream scientifically accepted view of climate change, and that of President Trump.

I would argue that there is a dangerous psychological quartet at work in how the new President, and some of his advisers and supporters, underestimates the importance of global warming. The elements of the quartet are: cognitive dissonance, confirmation bias, motivated reasoning, and aversion to a sure loss.
