The Hunger Index created by Professor Drew Starbird was included in Joint Venture: Silicon Valley's 2019 Silicon Valley Index.

The Hunger Index, measuring the number of meals provided to vulnerable households along with the number of missing meals, was included in Joint Venture: Silicon Valley's 2019 Silicon Valley Index.

Created by Professor Drew Starbird with the support of the Center for Food Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Bank of America, and Second Harvest Food Bank, The Hunger Index measures the gap between the need for food in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties and the ability of the most vulnerable individuals to get food either on their own or with the help of federal food-assistance programs such as CalFresh and local non-profit organizations like Second Harvest.
