Tammy L. Madsen (Ph.D., UCLA) is the W.M. Keck Foundation Chair of Strategic Management and Innovation and a former Associate Dean of the Leavey School of Business, Santa Clara University. Tammy’s research and teaching are at the intersection of strategy, innovation, and evolutionary dynamics – specific themes include: competitive heterogeneity and temporary advantage, shocks and growth under uncertainty, and co-innovation. Her work has received various awards from the Academy of Management’s Strategic Management (STR) Division, including the Glueck Best Paper Award and appears in outlets such as: Strategic Management Review, Strategic Management Journal, Organization Science, Journal of Management Studies, Industrial and Corporate Change, and Journal of Knowledge Management. Her new book, Co-Innovation Platforms: A Playbook for Enabling Innovation and Ecosystem Growth (Palgrave MacMillan Press) was co-authored with David Cruickshank (SAP, SCU Alum) and she also co-authored the fourth edition of Modern Competitive Strategy (2016, McGraw-Hill Press) with Gordon Walker.
Tammy teaches in the MBA, Executive MBA, and Executive Development programs at SCU where she has received more than 20 Extraordinary Faculty Awards for her teaching, research, and service contributions as well as the University President’s Special Recognition Award. She enjoys collaborating with organizations and alums on strategy development as well as teaching innovations. Early in her career, she was recognized as an Ascendant Scholar by the Western Academy of Management.
Tammy currently serves as the Director of the Strategy Research Foundation’s Dissertation Grant Program, Strategic Management Society, and on the Board of Advisors, Global Innovation Institute. She previously has served on the Board of Governors of the Academy of Management (AOM) and in a five-year leadership role for the AOM’s Strategic Management Division. She also has served in various leadership roles for the Leavey School of Business and on various committees at the college and university levels.
Tammy began her professional career as a test and evaluation engineer for the weapon control systems on the F14 aircraft and subsequently worked as a design engineer and program manager at Delco Electronics, General Motors. She holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering (UC Santa Barbara) and an M.S. in Systems Management (USC).
