Winn was a two-sport standout at Santa Clara, but made his mark professionally in Baseball. As an outfielder he helped guide the Broncos to the 1994 NCAA Tournament with a 40-20 overall record, including a first-place showing in the West Coast Conference. As a senior the following year, he earned All-WCC honors while batting .294 with 30 steals, a mark that still ranks third on the school's single-season list. Before concentrating on baseball, Winn was a two-year member of the Santa Clara basketball team, including the 1992-93 squad which upset No. 2 seed Arizona in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.
The California native was selected in the 3rd round of the 1995 MLB Draft by the Florida Marlins and enjoyed a 13-year professional career. He made his Major League debut in 1998 with Tampa Bay and earned the team's MVP award in 2002 after batting .298 with 14 home runs, 39 doubles, nine triples, and 27 steals. That same season he represented the team in the MLB All-Star game. A switch-hitter, Winn went on to play with Seattle (2003-05), San Francisco (2006-09), the New York Yankees (2010) and St. Louis (2010) while hitting .284 with 110 home runs and 662 RBIs in his career. He was inducted into the WCC Hall of Honor in 2016.
