While at SCU, Pavelko played quarterback, fullback, and was known to be one of the best kickers on the team. After the 1936 Sugar Bowl, Pavelko earned the starting quarterback role and won them their second Sugar Bowl in a row. During this game he had key punts of 51, 52, 53, and 71 yards, which pinned the opponent's back to their goal line.
