In both of Gillmor’s first two seasons on the basketball team, he was among the top three scorers on the team. By his senior year, he was the team captain while also being the top ball-handler and passer. His dribbling was so incredible that it helped eliminate the notorious Don Press in their series against the University of San Francisco. This allowed his shooting to also open up as he averaged 9.3 points per game. After graduating, he served in the Army, attaining the rank of Captain. Once his service was over, Gillmor came right back home to become the first elected mayor of Santa Clara from 1969-1977.
