Dick Davey was named the head coach of the Santa Clara men’s basketball program in 1992 after serving as assistant to Bronco legend Carroll Williams for 15 years. A four-time WCC Coach of the Year, Davey finished his illustrious career in 2007 with a 251-190 overall record including a 122-88 mark in the WCC. He is now second all-time in WCC wins behind only Williams (165). At home, the Broncos posted a 141-62 record and a .695 winning percentage with Davey at the helm. He won three WCC regular-season titles, one WCC Tournament championship, and made three NCAA Tournament appearances in his 15 seasons at Santa Clara. Davey also led the Santa Clara to five wins over top-25 opponents, including one of the top ten upsets in NCAA history when the 15th-seeded Broncos, led by Davey and Steve Nash, beat the number 2 seeded Arizona Wildcats. In 2016, Davey was inducted into the Santa Clara Broncos Hall of Fame, and one year later, he was inducted into the West Coast Conference Hall of Honor. Numerous players coached by Davey at SCU went on to play professional basketball both in the United States and overseas, including Nash, a two-time NBA MVP. Other former Broncos that played under Davey to reach the professional basketball ranks include Doron Perkins, Brian Jones, Steve Ross, Kyle Bailey, and Jason Sedlock.
